Rapid City students have interesting lesson

Mrs. DeVol's Fifth Grade

September 29, 2007

For the past three weeks, Mrs. DeVol's class has been studying cell parts, and the differences between plant cells and animals cells. For the students' final project, they had to come up with their own 3-D model to create either a plant or an animal cell.  Projects were judge on a) accuracy of parts, b)creative use of material, c)neatness and overall appearance, and d)having a key of at least 8 main organelles.

Nettie and her Jell-o cell model

A variety of projects were brought in including the ones made out Jell-O, clay, metal parts, everyday food items such as spiral macaroni for the mitochondria, a bouncy ball for the nucleus, plastic wrap for the cell membrane, and many other creative ideas!

Rob Scott and his sons brought in a potato launcher for a demonstration on Friday, Sept. 21.    The launcher is an example of Newton's laws of basic physics.   It is made out of pvc pipes, among other material, and when hooked to an air compressor (80lbs of psi) it launches potatoes and apples about 100ft ++ into the woods!  The students were very impressed!
