On Tuesday October 16th, six of our Advanced Placement Biology Students attended the MichBio Career Day at Michigan State University. We listened to a presentation on BioFuel and the University's plan for leading the development of a viable BioFuel option that would bring jobs to Michigan.
Next we attended a breakout session on investigative laboratory techniques and students sampled cutting edge technology that allowed medical diagnoses and DNA Fingerprinting in the field. Finally, we toured the campus, sampled ice cream from the Dairy Store, and ended our morning at the Center for Advanced Microscopy. There we explored the use of the Scanning Electron Microscope, Transmission Electron Microscope, and Compound Light Microscope. These are microscopes that MSU students only use if they are researching at the graduate level. They range in cost from $600,000.00 to 1.6 Million Dollars. This was quite an opportunity for our students.
After leaving MSU, we decided on a "pit" stop at Uncle John's Cider Mill. As you can see from the attached photos, a little "comic" relief was needed after a morning of serious learning.
