First graders learn about parent's careers

First graders are learning about community jobs in the language arts unit "Our Neighborhood at Work". We discussed goods and services, brainstormed lists of tools workers use, and read some great nonfiction texts about people at work. As a special event, we held Career Day on the afternoon of November 21st. To prepare, we sent out invitations to parents, and students came up with lists of questions to ask our visitors. Beforehand, students practiced interviewing some school workers... Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Ziecina, and Mr. Price! For the real thing, we had many guests. We learned a lot-- what a paycheck looks like, how boxes get made, what a wrecker does, how dental hygienists do their jobs, and much more! Thank you to all of our visitors-- It's great for students to see what happens in the working world.
