After-School programs keep Rapid City kids busy
December 01, 2007
Over 50% of the (K-5) students attend the after school programs at Rapid City Elementary School. The three programs are offered to help students with their educational skills, to encourage physical fitness, and to promote creativity.
Bobcat Brain Busters is directed by the Title I teacher, Dan Belanger. This program addresses the academic needs of small groups of students through fun learning activities. These activities are intended to enhance the reading and math skills across the grade levels. First grade student, Taylor, says "I'm glad when it's Tuesday because we have Brain Busters." Children from Kindergarten and first grade attend on Tuesdays, second and third on Wednesdays, and fourth and fifth on Thursdays. Program capacity is limited.
H-3 (Healthy, Happy, Hour) is directed by 3rd/4th grade teacher, Mr. Bill Vandergriff. This program offers an hour of fast paced exercise for our students. It is also a chance to compete in the President's Physical Fitness Award for pull-ups, rope climb, ladder climb, and shuttle run. The physical activities allow students to burn up energy and tensions after a long day at school.
C.A.T. (Children's Art Time) was created to enhance the Art Curriculum and allow the children additional time in producing their works of art. Second and third grade students meet on Tuesdays; fourth and fifth grade students on Wednesdays, and kindergarten and first grade students on Thursdays. The children are looking forward to their art shows. One will be in winter and one in spring. We hope all our families and friends will enjoy our creations. Second grade teacher Mrs. Judy Gurr directs this program.
