Middle school OM teams do well in regional competition
One team advanced to the state level!

Two Kalkaska Middle School teams traveled to Traverse City on March 8 to compete in the Regional Odyssey of the Mind Tournament. Odyssey of the Mind is a creative, problem-solving competition for students of all ages. Every year, a team has a choice of five long-term problems to solve. After choosing the problem, teams work for months to solve it.

Mrs. Jonna Brown’s team chose a problem called “The Eccentrics!” The problem required the team to create and present a humorous performance about three Eccentric Characters who demonstrate odd behavior, peculiar mannerisms, and unconventional dress. The performance had to include a problem involving an Earth system. The Eccentrics had to solve the problem. Mrs. Brown’s team performed before an enthusiastic crowd and won bronze medals for their third place finish. They have the opportunity to compete at the state level in Kentwood, Michigan.
Mrs. Collette Sabins’ team chose a problem called “Odyssey Road Rally.” The team had to design, build, and operate an original vehicle that they drove in a team-created road rally with four sports-related checkpoints. At each checkpoint, the vehicle had to complete a sporting event such as ping-pong, soccer, baseball, and fishing. This team used the theme of a Roman chariot race for life and finished in fifth place.
A big thank you goes out to McLean’s Hardware for donating a shopping cart as the base for a vehicle and Northland for the paper shopping bags used as the leather in the gladiator’s costumes.
Everyone had a great time, and we wish the best of luck to Mrs. Brown’s team as they move on.
