A Veteran's Day Celebration
November 13, 2008
Students in Mr. McCarty’s fourth grade class hosted a special event to celebrate Veteran’s Day. They wanted to learn more about what Soldiers/Marines do. They also wanted to honor the service of a Veteran.
Marine Veteran, Corporal Daniel Evans, paid a visit to the classroom to share his military experiences with the students. Mr. Evans started off with a slide show. He showed the students pictures of military vehicles, sandstorms in Iraq, terrain in Africa, and children from Baghdad. This presentation was followed by questions from the fourth graders. They learned a great deal about what Marines do when they are deployed to other countries. Corporal Evans also passed around his service medals for students to see. As a sign of appreciation for Veterans (particularly Evans), the class performed a special reader’s theatre-type script titled November: A Time of Thanks and Remembrance in America- In Poetry, Song, and Speech. They also made thank you cards to give to Corporal Evans. He really enjoyed the presentation. The celebration concluded with some red, white, and blue cookies!
