Three Lakes Association provides funds to enhance natural science experiences for our children
The Three Lakes Association has funded several natural science field trips and other requests made by KPS teachers. These grants will help students learn about not only water issues, but astronomy, birds, and wildlife in this very special area of northern Michigan.
The Three Lakes Association's primary service area is the Chain of Lakes watershed in Antrim County. The association has expanded its educational program, however, to include Kalkaska Public Schools. Earlier this year, educational outreach coordinator Mrs. Patricia Roush visited school administrators and asked them to submit a 'wish list' from teachers for field trips, textbooks, videos, etc.
The requests arrived, and the association responded generously!
In addition to funding the Inland Seas field trip, which is enjoyed by middle school students annually, the association has funded:
- A DVD of "The Earth-Moon System" requested by fourth grade teacher Mrs. Michelle Moeggenberg.
- Partial payment for two Grass River Natural Area astronomy field trips sought by fifth grade teacher Mrs. Diane Wildfong.
- Kids Discover magazine requested by fifth grade teacher Mrs. Kathy Liverance
- Three science conferences for three middle school teachers requested by sixth grade teacher Mr. Paul Guy.
- Partial payment for a field trip to Grass River Natural Area requested by seventh grade teacher Mr. Andy Henderson.
- "Fun with Science" class materials including various labs, birdhouse building, etc. requested by Mr. Henderson.
- Partial payment for Kalkaska High School teacher Mrs. Staci Short to take Biology and AP Biology students to Manitou Island.
In addition, the association donated beautiful, framed maps of the area to libraries in each building.
The contribution to KPS totaled $2136.
The staff and students of Kalkaska Public Schools express their appreciation for these contributions.
