Counting Pumpkin Seeds
By Lisa Sutton, First Grade Teacher
October 28, 2008
The first graders in Mrs. Sutton’s class learned how to skip count by tens using pumpkin seeds. The class was divided up into four teams and each team had to clean out a pumpkin, dig the seeds out and then divide them all into small groups of ten.
Once the seeds were in as many groups of ten as possible they counted aloud together with Mrs. Sutton to get the total number of seeds that were in the pumpkin. Then the class identified which pumpkin had the greatest number of seeds and which had the least. They then added the totals of each pumpkin and came up with a very large number! A lot of learning and team work made it possible for the students to have fun and apply their knowledge. Who says math isn’t fun????
