Children really are excited this time of the year with all the wonderful fall activities going on around them. Mrs. Sutton's first graders are all geared up for Halloween so we decided to put them to work using pumpkins for math.
Mrs. Poli and Mrs. Beckstead donated pumpkins to our classroom and the kids were divided into four groups. Their task was to get all the seeds out of the pumpkin and put them into groups. Two groups put the seeds into groups of 10, one group put the seeds in groups of 5 and one group had the task of putting the seeds into groups of 2. An additional task was to measure the circumference of each pumpkin. When all the seeds were put into groups Mrs. Sutton helped that group count the seeds. One group had 376 seeds and a circumference of 35 inches, the second group had 678 seeds and a circumference of 27 inches, the third group had 537 seeds with a circumference of 37 inches and the final pumpkin had 719 seeds with a circumference of 19 inches. The first graders discussed their findings and came to the conclusion that the smaller the pumpkin, the more seeds it will have, which is not what we guessed at all. It was a fun lesson that the kids enjoyed and brought real life to the classroom. Those are the experiences that children need and learn the most from. Happy fall everyone!
