Rapid City Montessori Preschool

The Rapid City Elementary School is proud to be the home of Rapid City Montessori Preschool Program. Montessori is a child-centered program in a language immersion environment, providing loving support and gentle academics for growing minds, as well as movement-based activities for growing bodies. The Montessori Preschool is a multi-age program for youngsters 2 ½ to 5 years of age. You will find the classroom deliberately prepared with interesting activities that will nourish your child’s desire to explore and learn. Activities are designed to exercise the muscles and coordination needed for writing, develop the powers of concentration necessary for success in reading and math, practice social skills and graces, as well as foster a respect for the environment and the people in it. Each child is introduced to developmentally appropriate activities in one-on-one lessons with the teacher.  The child is then free to choose an activity that interests him or her and work at his or her own pace without disturbance. We’re a family at Montessori, and always welcome our parents to observe, share a special talent, or join us at lunchtime.

 

       The Rapid City program is fully licensed and very competitively priced. Qualified families may participate in the school breakfast and lunch program, as well as DHS-subsidization.

Schedule:

 

  • Parents can choose 2 to 5 mornings per week.
  • 8:30AM – 11:30 AM Monday - Friday
  • 7:30-8:30 optional early morning drop off
  • Montessori Preschool follows the Kalkaska Public School calendar.

Financial Aid

 

      •         If you believe you may qualify for financial assistance for child care, contact the Kalkaska Family Independence Agency at 258-1200, or go to the office at 503 N. Birch St., Kalkaska, 7:30-5:00 week days. The office is closed on weekends and state holidays.

 

      

 

The Readiness Grant Program for four-year-olds may be available to some children at Rapid City Elementary School in the 2007-08 school year. Contact the school if you believe your child might qualify for this program.

 

Aspects of the Montessori Approach

Practical Life materials are usually the first to attract the preschool-age child. They provide the child ways to learn specific skills, develop coordination, and to grow in independence. These activities include pouring, polishing, scrubbing, preparing snacks, care of the environment, gardening, carpentry and games of courtesy and grace to learn social skills.

 

Language materials and games challenge the child to practice oral expression, vocabulary and sounds, letter recognition, pre-writing and pre-reading, during this time in the child’s life when he/she naturally and joyfully absorbs the tools of speaking, reading and writing to be used for the rest of his/her life.

 

Mathematics is presented in concrete hands-on form to prepare for later abstract concepts such as the decimal system, number operations (addition, subtraction, etc.) fractions, and the beginnings of plane and solid geometry.

 

Cultural Subjects are presented to the child as short vivid impressions. The child then explores and experiments using art, music, creative movement, science and social studies.

 

Sensorial materials help the child to refine his/her senses and his/her ability to explore through sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. They help the child develop the concentration skills necessary for success in reading and math, and incorporate many sequential and organizational relationships.
