Mr. Lee Sandy receives honor from the Michigan Association of School Administrators

Lee Sandy, Superintendent of Kalkaska Public Schools, has been named the Michigan Association of School Administrators (MASA) Regional Superintendent of the Year.

Mr. Sandy has been with KPS since July, 2006, and started as an interim superintendent. He was later asked to stay on a more permanent basis, although he will ‘officially’ retire in July, 2014.

Mr. Sandy will receive an award at the Region II meeting in Gaylord on Nov. 22. MASA honors a superintendent in each of its nine regions who has shown tremendous effort and dedication to enriching the lives of children and the community as a whole. Mr. Sandy has provided 47 years of dedicated service to school districts in Michigan.

He began teaching in Vestaburg Community Schools in 1966, before moving to Montabella Community Schools. Later, he moved to administrative roles in Fife Lake (which became Forest Area Community Schools), Pine River, and Waldron. After a his ‘first’ retirement and work as an arbitrator and architectural firm consultant, Mr. Sandy served interim positions in Au Gres-Sims, Saginaw Township, Leland, Gladwin, Beal City, Fairview, Baldwin, Onekama, and, finally, in Kalkaska. If you look at all the places he has been, it is no wonder that he knows everyone!

Mr. Sandy’s co-workers describe him as a dedicated, hands-on leader. He is active in the district and community. He is well known and has earned much respect among his peers.

MASA is a statewide association that represents superintendents and administrators in Michigan’s local and intermediate school districts.
